A child named Sarah was standing with her mother at the wal-mart check out line. Her mother had successfully diverted her eyes from all time and money wasting things...until this moment. Sarah's eye was caught by a plasticy, cheapo pearl necklace hanging there at the cashwrap. She timidly asked her mother if she could buy it for her. "Please mommy...I love it. I really really want it." Her mother finally agreed by reminding her she did have a small bit of allowance that she could use. She thought it was a bargain at $3.99.
Sarah wore it everywhere. She wore it outside to play, she wore it to school, she wore it to church, she wore it to bed, and she even would have worn it in the shower except that her mother thought it might turn her neck green. Sarah agreed that would be gross; but as soon as she was dry, she put it back on immediately.
One night her father came in to tuck her in for the night. He asked Sarah for her pearl necklace. She said "no! I love it. I can't let you have it." He said ok and tucked her in.
The next night was the same. Then the night after that. Then the one after that. This went on and on until her father would just come in with his hand out and she would just shake her head "no."
Finally one night with tears in her eyes she regretfully handed him the necklace. He took it with a smile and put it in his pocket. From the other pocket he pulled out a real pearl necklace with a gold clasp and put it around her neck. She was overcome with joy as was he. She couldn't find the words to say what she felt. Finally she simply said, "you had it there all along didn't you?" He smiled and nodded "yes."
Woody Allen was once quoted, after he had an affair with his adopted adult daughter, "the heart wants what the heart wants." This is true, however most of the time, the heart is dead wrong. We ought to trust God and realise that he has something better for us, if we'll just be humble and admit that we need it.
